H. Allen Hight Learning Center

We are proud to announce the completion and opening of the H. Allen Hight Learning Center in Sacramento, California! H. Allen Hight consists of an elementary school and a middle school housed on one campus. Featured at the Collaborative for High Performance Schools’ (CHPS) annual Greentools conference, this high performance school was designed to meet CHPS’ Best Practices design guidelines for sustainable school design.

Some of the ways we achieved CHPS certification include high efficiency, energy-saving systems*, the use of building materials with recycled content and low VOC emissivity, a reduced building footprint, and the use of an Energy Star “Cool Roof” over most of the school and a living green roof over the Administration Building.

H. Allen Hight is the first CHPS school in our state’s capitol, and the first public school in California to have a green roof.

Because of H. Allen Hight Learning Center’s high performance, sustainable design features, the Natomas Unified School District received $400,000 in Prop 1D funding and qualified for an $89,000 incentive from the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) “Savings By Design Program”. Prop 1D is the State of California’s initiative for the design of sustainable, high performance schools and funds are awarded by the Division of the State Architect (using the same criteria as CHPS) for high performance school design. SMUD’s “Savings by Design” program awards financial incentives for energy saving building designs.

*The four H. Allen Hight buildings achieved a 23.15% reduction in net energy usage compared to Title 24 (2001) baseline average.
